Downy Woodpeckerwinter bird feeding

Did you know that feeding and providing fresh water for wild birds in the wintertime doubles their chance of survival? And it is fun to learn tolearn about and enjoy the beautiful native birds of Florence!

Types of feed for the winter

Black oil sunflower seeds and suet are two of the most popular meals for the likes of Black-Capped Chickadees, Red-Breasted and Pygmy Nuthatches, House Finches,Northern Flickers, and Downy Woodpeckers. Try raw, unsalted peanuts to attract Clark's Nutcrackers.

Keeping your feeders safe

Be sure to protect your feeders from squirrels, deer and cats, which can be aggressive pests. Clean your bird feeders and bird baths regularly (and make sure the water isn't frozen--you can purchase heated birdbaths or special heaters that can be placed in a birdbath)
